By bus from Palma de Mallorca

The most economical option is to use public transport:

By car

If you have your own or rented car on the island, the journey is very simple:

• From Palma de Mallorca, take the MA-19 motorway towards the airport
• Follow the signs on Can Pastilla/Palma Aquarium
• There is a large parking lot at the aquarium (fee approx. €5 per day)

The journey from the center of Palma takes approximately 15 minutes, from the airport only 5 minutes.

Taxi or Uber

A taxi from the centre of Palma will cost you around €15-20, the journey takes 15 minutes. From the airport it is even cheaper, around €10-12.

Top 5 must-see attractions at Palma Aquarium

Palma Aquarium is divided into several thematic zones, which represent various marine ecosystems. In my experience, these attractions are absolutely unmissable:

1. Big Blue - the largest deep-sea aquarium in Europe

By far the most impressive part of the complex. With a depth of 8,5 metres and a volume of 3,5 million litres of seawater, it is the largest deep-sea aquarium in Europe. It is home to several species of sharks, including the impressive sand and grey sharks, giant rays and many other deep-sea creatures. Watching these creatures from the glass corridor is an experience that will remain etched in your memory.

My tip for visiting: If you want to see the sharks at their most active, plan a visit on Friday at noon, when they are feeding. The show lasts approximately 30 minutes and is narrated in Spanish and English.

2. Mediterranean exposures

A series of 25 aquariums showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea. You will see typical fish species from the waters around Mallorca, including moray eels, octopuses, crustaceans and many brightly coloured Mediterranean fish. This section is particularly interesting for those who snorkel or dive on the island.

3. Jungle - tropical rainforest

A unique exhibition that will transport you to the Amazon rainforest. A winding path leads between tropical vegetation, piranha ponds and an aquarium with exotic freshwater species. Special attractions are the pools with small caimans and the terrarium with anacondas. The air humidity and temperature are adjusted to match the real rainforest.

4. Explora! - interactive children's zone

A paradise for little explorers with touch pools where children can pet starfish, small rays and other harmless sea creatures. There are also creative workshops, educational games and specially designed small aquariums at children's eye level.

5. Mediterranean Gardens

After exploring the indoor exhibits, you will be greeted by the beautiful outdoor gardens, which cover an area of ​​4 m000. They are divided into various thematic sections, which represent typical Mediterranean vegetation - olive trees, citrus trees, lavender, rosemary and other aromatic herbs. The gardens also feature relaxation areas, fountains and a small pond with water turtles.

Since I haven't traveled alone for a long time and I've described more about it here several times, How to travel to Spain with children, I won't spare myself a few sentences and advice about visiting this attraction with your family. 

For me, Palma Aquarium is an absolutely perfect place for a family trip if you are spending your holiday in Mallorca. 

Ideal age for children to visit

The aquarium is suitable for children of all ages, but I think it will be best enjoyed by children aged 5 to 12. For the youngest, the visit may be a bit long, so I recommend planning a shorter tour focused on the most attractive exhibits.

What to see here with children?

• Big Blue - sharks fascinate children of all ages
• Jungle - passage through a tropical forest with caimans
• Educational programs - special shows for children take place during holidays and weekends
• Outdoor gardens - a space where children can run around

Practical tips for families with children

1. Strollers and changing tables - the entire area is fully wheelchair accessible, baby changing tables are available in the ladies' and men's toilets
2. Refreshment - there are several dining options on site, but you can also bring your own snacks and use the picnic area in the gardens
3. Creche - near the local café there is a small corner for relaxing with children
4. Little Marine Biologist Workshop - special program for children from 6 years old (advance reservation required)
5. Photo of the place - several places for taking family photos with themed decorations (paid)

Best time to visit

Palma Aquarium can be very busy during peak season. I recommend these strategies:

• Best days: Tuesday and Wednesday are usually the least busy
• Best time: early morning (right after opening) or later afternoon (2-3 hours before closing)
• Avoid: weekends, public holidays and around noon (11:00-14:00)
• Ideal months: May, June, September and October offer good weather but fewer tourists than July and August

And you're wondering how much time to set aside for your visit? If you're here with children, the whole morning or afternoon, i.e. approximately 3 or 4 hours, will definitely be enough. 

Palma Aquarium or Marineland Mallorca – what to choose? 

Finally, I left one difficult topic :-) Is Marineland or this aquarium better for families with children in Mallorca? 

The answer is not simple! I would say that if you have younger children who are attracted to underwater shows and who want to see the animals very close up, then Marineland is better. I would recommend Palma Aquarium for older children, who can also learn something here and find out about the individual creatures. The aquarium is also great for rainy weather, so if it happens to rain, there's nothing to worry about and you can head here. 

Personally, I like Palma Aquarium better because, in my opinion, the range of attractions here is much more varied and not as one-sided as in Marineland.
