Quick guide: Austria Motorway Vignette (2026)

Austria currently has almost 20 modern motorways with a total length of over 1700 km. Thanks to them you can quickly get to where you need to go within the country, or with their help you can significantly shorten your journey to neighboring states such as Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia or even Hungary. 

Personally, I most often buy an Austrian vignette when my family and I travel to the Vienna airport (see my tips for parking near Vienna airport), from where we set off to Barcelona or to other destinations.

However, before you go on the Austrian highways with your car (or any other vehicle), you should familiarize yourself with the situation in Austria regarding highway signs and tolls. All related questions will be answered in this article which contains information current for 2024:

What to know before buying a vignette in Austria?

• What kinds of vignettes are there? You can currently choose between 2 types of highway vignettes: 
  1. Vignette in the form of a sticker that you stick on the windshield of a car. 
  2. Digital highway vignette (e-vignette) which you simply buy online on the Internet. Due to the simplicity of purchasing an electronic highway vignette, I will primarily focus on this type in the article.
• Who needs it? Any motor vehicle up to 3,5 tons: passenger car, car with trailer, caravan, motorcycle... The decisive factor in this case is the total weight. 
• Where to drive with a vignette? With an Austrian motorway vignette, you can use all motorways and expressways that exist in Austria
• Are tolls payable in Austria? Yes! Even if you purchase a motorway vignette, you may encounter a toll payment requirement on some roads (e.g. the Brenner A13 and Tauer A10 motorways, you can find more about paid toll sections on the ASFiNAG website).

Prices of motorway vignettes in Austria (2024)

The price of a highway vignette in Austria depends on its validity and vehicle type.

You can buy a highway stamp in different validities: 1-day, 10-day, 2-month and annual. The one-day stamp is a novelty: it did not exist last year, and the shortest was 10 days. 

The price adjustment is also related to the introduction of the one-day motorway stamp: they increased by a few euros on average in 2024, e.g. a 10-day pass previously cost €9,90 and from 2024 you can buy it for €11,50. And even if the price is higher, I personally like the established one-day stamps for all those who only need to go to Austria for a detour and will really only use the highway for a short time.

These prices are valid for vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes. Heavier vehicles, caravans, etc. above this weight must pay tolls according to the actual kilometers traveled reported via the so-called GO-Box. 

Frequently asked questions related to the purchase of an Austrian vignette

Is there a one-day motorway vignette for Austria?

Yes, starting in 2024 there is. If you're heading to Austria just for a detour and you know you'll be using the local motorways, you can buy a one-day motorway stamp for €8,60. However, keep in mind that this stamp is only available for purchase online, in digital form! You cannot physically buy it anywhere as a sticker. 

How do I find out if the Austrian highway vignette is valid?

Go to ASFiNAG store with highway vignettes, and there click on the bottom middle window called "query validity". Then just enter the place of registration and your license plate to find out if the highway plate is valid for the vehicle in question. 

Practical example: Austria highway vignette valid for 10 days

To illustrate how it is with the validity of the Austrian highway vignette, I have one example. You purchase a vignette for 10 days. This vignette becomes valid on the first calendar day entered during the purchase + is valid for the next 9 calendar days. E.g. if you choose July 10 as the start of validity, you can use the vignette until the end of July 19. The vignette will therefore be valid until 23:59 on this day. (You risk a fine if you complete your journey after midnight the following day). 

Where to stick the Austrian vignette on the car and motorbike?

Peel off the protective film from the sign and then stick it on the windshield in the middle of the rear view mirror or to the top left from the driver's point of view. You can find more about affixing an Austrian highway sign in the last paragraph of the article.

Do I have to have a highway vignette with my ZTP and ZTP/P card in Austria?

In the Czech Republic, ZTP and ZTP/P card holders do not have to purchase a highway vignette and can use Czech highways free of charge, but in Austria there is no such thing. All drivers must have a valid highway license without exception. 

Practical guide: How to buy an Austrian motorway vignette online with same-day validity?

1. Go to the ASFiNAG website, which is the Austrian highway and road organization. 
2. Select one of the Austrian highway signs according to the vehicle type and validity and click "Buy now" (Buy now); see prices and validity.
3. You will now be redirected to the online store where you can make your purchase. Before you do this you should keep in mind, that if you are an end customer, the validity of the highway vignette can be 18 days from the date of purchase at the earliest! If you don't mind this, continue to the next step. If you need the vignette to be valid earlier ("I want to go to Austria tomorrow!"), it is necessary to change the user type to corporate customer (or buy a paper vignette). Although because of this you will lose the possibility of a possible complaint if you change your mind about the purchase, but the highway vignette can start paying immediately. You make the change by clicking on the three dots on the top right and in the menu that opens, click on the "Change now" button in the "Customer type" section. Then instead of "I'm a consumer" you select "I represent a company". Confirm everything with the button and you can start filling in the vehicle data. 
4. Filling in vehicle and trip data.
   1. Type of vehicle: Car or Motorcycle
   2. Country of registration: Where the car is registered; select the Czech Republic (it's almost at the end of the list)
   3. License plate number: Here you enter the vehicle registration plate (or state license plate)
   4. License plate number (repeat): Here you just repeat the mark, which is a check if you haven't made a mistake.
   5. Please select your start date: Select the date from which the highway vignette should be valid. (If you don't see the date you need, you probably didn't pay attention to point 3 ;)
   6. Continue to the next page
5. Filling in contact details
   1. Please enter your email address: Enter your email address. Then fill it again for confirmation.
   2. Select your payment method: Choose how you want to pay, I personally choose Credit/Debit card, i.e. payment by card. 
   3. Click on the "Continue to the order review" button
6. Check all entered data. 
   1. Tick ​​at the top right that you have read the terms and conditions
   2. At the bottom of the page, fill in the protection against robots
   3. Confirm everything with the "Order with obligation to pay" button
7. Make a payment: enter classic data such as cardholder, card number, etc. Then click on "Pay now". 
8. Done - electronic vignette purchased and you can hit the road! 

After a successful purchase you confirmation of the validity of the highway vignette will be sent to your email in a PDF file. If you have purchased an electronic highway vignette, you do not need to print the file in any way nor have it with you during the trip. This is only necessary if you don't buy a vignette, but only pay online tolls for certain sections.

Buying an Austrian motorway vignette in Mikulov

If, like me, you are traveling to Austria from Brno, and you forgot to buy an Austrian highway vignette for some reason, the last possibility to buy it in the Czech Republic before the Austrian border is Mikulov.

Just before leaving the city is the MOL gas station (map), where you can buy an Austrian highway vignette at any time of the day or night – the station is open 24 hours a day.

Once you get the paper vignette, you need to stick it on the windshield from inside the car. A lot of people ask where does the Austrian highway vignette stick? It does not matter – it is only important that the mark is clearly visible on the glass. Therefore, a place in the middle of the rear-view mirror or the upper left corner (from the driver's point of view) is recommended, and you should also avoid places where you have some significant tinting on the glass.
