The big guide: weather in Barcelona
Are you going to Barcelona and want to know what the weather will be like in the selected month or what the long-term forecast is? This article will answer these questions for you, so you don't head to Spain with the wrong clothes and then blame yourself for being too cold or warm...
In general about the weather in Barcelona - what are the winters and summers like?
Barcelona is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and therefore the weather here is typically Mediterranean. The summers here are very warm, it rarely rains and temperatures often hover around 30 °C. Weather-wise, hot summer days are generally more tolerable in coastal areas such as Costa Brava, Costa Dorada or even in Barcelona as opposed to inland. The sea mainly has its share in this, which can cool the land and also lower the temperature on hot summer days by a few degrees.
Winters in Barcelona are mostly snow-free, very mild and usually the temperature does not drop below 10 °C. This is why a holiday in Barcelona is a relatively good choice during this period. Plus, thanks to the lower temperatures, there won't be as many tourists here, and you'll enjoy the city in more peace than, say, in the summer... :-)

What is the best time to visit Barcelona?
As you can see from the table of average temperatures above, the weather in Barcelona is relatively pleasant all year round. Anyway, if you want to experience some real sunshine and be sure that not many drops fall, visit Barcelona between May and July. At this time, you will come across the best tourist weather, which favors swimming in the sea and visiting the local beaches.
I personally think it is the best time to visit the city is spring (March, April, May) or autumn (October, November). The reason is simple - the temperatures are "just right" (i.e. you don't have to suffer from the summer heat or walk around wearing clothes) and above all you avoid the main onslaught of tourists. There are most of them in the city from May to September. That's why I personally like the beginning of spring the best, March to May is ideal. But I understand that sometimes you need to experience Barcelona in the summer to have the possibility of comparison... :-)
Spring weather in Barcelona: March, April and May are very pleasant
Spring is one of those seasons when it the best chance you will encounter rain in Barcelona. The fading winter is reflected in the weather, and for example, March in the city is sometimes quite cold. If there is any time when the weather changes quite often, it is spring. But the advantage of this period is the smaller number of tourists, thanks to which you will experience a much better and, in my opinion, more authentic atmosphere. Most of the people who go here in the spring prefer May, when it starts to get quite warm and the sun can lean into it quite well.
Spring temperature range:
- March in Barcelona: 9-16 ºC, 48 mm of rainfall
- April in Barcelona: 11-18 ºC, 43 mm of rain
- May in Barcelona: 14-21 ºC, 54 mm of rainfall
Weather in summer in Barcelona: June, July and August means hot
Summer marks the start of the main tourist season. It will get quite hot in the city and the number of tourists will increase rapidly. But if you want to enjoy, for example, swimming, the sea and the nightlife, this is the perfect time to visit Barcelona.
July and August are really hot months in terms of weather, although the weather in Barcelona and other coastal resorts in Costa Brava it is considerably more tolerable in summer than further inland in Spain. The sea, which cools the land, has its share in this.
Personally, I advise everyone to avoid or at least avoid the peak season they provided accommodation with quality air conditioning. Without it, you will have trouble getting a good night's sleep...
Span summer temperatures:
- June in Barcelona: 18-25 ºC, 37 mm of rainfall
- July in Barcelona: 21-28 ºC, 27 mm of rain
- August in Barcelona: 21-28 ºC, 49 mm of rainfall
Autumn weather in Barcelona: September, October and November bring the cooler months
The weather in Barcelona, and indeed in the whole of Spain, is somewhat cooler from October to November, and the temperature starts to slowly drop from an average of 21 degrees to 15 degrees. The season has reached its peak and the main tourist rush is slowly starting to subside. This is also the reason why I like autumn months like November or December in Barcelona.
Even though the sun won't shine every day in these months and sometimes there may be a little rain, the weather is still warm and it's really nice here.
Span autumn temperatures:
- September in Barcelona: 19-25 ºC, 76 mm of rainfall
- October in Barcelona: 15-21 ºC, 86 mm of rainfall
- November in Barcelona: 11-16 ºC, 52 mm of rainfall
Weather in winter in Barcelona: December, January, February are cold, but much warmer than in the Czech Republic
Winter in Barcelona lasts from December to February. Although compared to the winter in the Czech Republic, the local Spanish one cannot be compared much. The temperature here is usually around 12 degrees, the sun doesn't shine much and the wind mostly blows. However, already during February you can warm up decently in Barcelona, especially if you are frozen because of the weather here in the Czech Republic.
If you're going to Barcelona over Christmas and New Year's Eve, keep that in mind December and January are not exactly warm months, so it pays to pack a good sweater and coat in your suitcase.
A lot of people ask me about autumn and winter in Barcelona and I say yes even in these periods it is nice in the city. The Mediterranean climate has its share in this, when even in December you have temperatures between 10-15 degrees. While we often experience bitter cold and snow, there is nothing like that here and it is still relatively warm here. And there are also significantly fewer people here than in the summer... So if you are tempted to spend the Christmas holidays or the turn of the year in Barcelona and enjoy the city in a slightly different atmosphere, don't hesitate and go for it!
Even in winter, the city is well prepared for tourism, for example even in the winter months you can sit in the garden at most restaurants because they are heated - in short, local hoteliers and restaurateurs are ready for anything.
And it goes without saying that you'll get significantly better prices for off-season dates plane tickets or maybe accommodations.
Span winter temperatures:
- December in Barcelona: 8-13 ºC, 45 mm of rainfall
- January in Barcelona: 6-13 ºC, 31 mm of rainfall
- February in Barcelona: 7-14 ºC, 39 mm of rainfall
Frequently asked questions about the weather in Barcelona
When is the best time to go to Barcelona?
If you want to really enjoy the city in all its beauty, go outside the main tourist season. Personally, I like the end of winter and the beginning of spring (March – May) or autumn (September – November) best. The main reason is that you avoid the main rush of tourists and the weather is bearable.
What is the sea temperature in Barcelona?
It all depends on what time of year you go to the city. In general, the temperature of the sea is not very stable, so for example in March do not expect more than 12-14 degrees, but again, for example, in August during the hottest days you can look forward to 25-29 degrees. Since you will find in Barcelona lots of beaches, some early adopters are able to swim already at the turn of April and May, when the temperatures often hardly rise above 20 degrees.
Does it make sense to go to Barcelona for Christmas or New Year's Eve?
Sights are open as normal in December and the New Year, with the exception of Christmas Day (December 24th), Boxing Day (December 25th) and New Year's Day (January 1st), when opening hours are reduced or closed entirely (check the website specific monuments). If you are in Barcelona for Christmas, check out my tips for what to do on Christmas Day.
Does it snow in Barcelona in winter?
No! Due to the fact that the city is washed by the sea, you will only rarely find snow directly in Barcelona. Winters here tend to be dry.
I want to go to Barcelona in January or February, is that a good idea?
It depends on what exactly you are looking for - in December there are usually more people and it is possible to enjoy the atmosphere of Advent, in January it is more peaceful. Temperatures are similar in both months and range around 10 degrees.
