Center of Barcelona: square Pl. Catalunya - where is it and what must you see?

It is the main square and the heart of the city Plaça Catalunya, which is followed by the famous one La Rambla street.

Plaça Catalunya is characterized by two things:

First of all, it is main transport hub city ​​and secondly it is a popular homeland number of pigeons. Although it is not as extreme here as in San Marco Square in Venice, there are still quite a few birds begging for a treat.

Plaça Catalunya as Barcelona's main square, it is about 50 square meters and you can find shops of all kinds (e.g. El Corte Inglés mall, all kinds of Zara, Desigual, etc.), banks, theaters, many restaurants, bars and several clubs (Hard Rock Café).

All important arteries of the city also converge on this square, namely commercial Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, La Rambla a Portal de l'Angel. Among other things, there are several interesting statues right in the center of the square. These are beautifully lit up at night and together with the surrounding traffic, you really feel like you are in a really lively city.


On square Pl. In Catalunya you will find the multi-storey department store El Corte Ingles, which does not look very nice...


...but it has an amazing food court on the top floor La Plaça Gastro Mercat, where you can eat anything from tapas, through salads, main dishes to ice creams or coffee. And the view of the city to eat is also worth it!

Famous street La Rambla connects the square with port. In addition to the number of tourists who walk down the street every day, the so-called living sculptures will certainly catch your attention. It is a kind of specialty typical of La Rambla. You will see the statues in the most amazing outfits and make-up from white to gold to black. Some of them only make strange or smiling facial expressions, others are engaged in some activity (juggling, dancing or sitting on the toilet) and some can blow your nose at you. Various oddities are not an exception here, rather the opposite. The street is lined with hotels and hostels, restaurants and shops, as well as stalls selling souvenirs, postcards, flowers, jewelery or paintings. 

Compared to other cities, the center of Barcelona is relatively small - everything is a short distance away and you can walk everywhere if you have the time. More about traveling in Barcelona >
