The Arc de Triomphe in Barcelona: a monumental commemoration of the World's Fair

In Barcelona, ​​you will find many monuments, which we owe to various world exhibitions and other events: let's name a random The magic fountain on Montjuic, Columbus Monument, beautiful waterfront and beaches, the Mies van der Rohe pavilion or the Arc de Triomphe described just now (Arc de Triomphe). 

This Barcelona gem is a memento of the World Exhibition of 1888, when it served as the entrance gate to the entire area, which after its end was transformed into the main city park (Parc de la Ciutadella).

A beautiful building from the peak of modernism

His design for the Arc de Triomphe in Barcelona is signed by the architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas, who is considered one of the leading figures of the modernist movement in Catalonia alongside greats such as Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner or Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

What makes the Arc de Triomphe interesting? 

Once you arrive here, go around the entire arch nicely from all sides and look how monumental this building in the so-called neomudejar style acts.

The arch is truly impressive: its dimensions are 30 x 28 x 12,5 meters, and if you decide to examine it in detail, you will discover in its upper part depicted topics that were relevant to people at the time of the world exhibition: industry, agriculture or perhaps trade. 

The arch stands on a wide promenade lined on both sides with palm trees and a large number of benches.

Around the arch at any time of the day or night, you can come across a lot of street artists, dancers and other people who will try to attract your attention with their creations. (For example, our children liked bubble shooters - does that word even exist? :) - simply people who make big bubbles that children can chase...)

Also, be careful not to bump into you, because this place is also popular among local skaters due to its surface. 

Due to the high concentration of people here definitely beware, so you don't become a victim some pickpocket...

And I probably don't need to say twice that this whole place looks great in photos, so if you're hunting for Instagram snapshots in Barcelona, ​​this is a place you can't miss...

And if you head to the Arc de Triomphe, don't hesitate to combine your visit with already the aforementioned city park, a nearby zoo or some of the museums, definitely worth it!
