What traditional dishes to eat in Barcelona if you want to avoid gluten?
I think Spanish cuisine is quite accommodating to anyone with any dietary restrictions. Many - even traditional dishes - are also suitable for those who try to avoid certain foods or ingredients.
If you go to a classic restaurant in Barcelona and are in doubt about what traditional food you can try, below are some tips for inspiration if you are trying to eat gluten-free:
- paella – traditional paella does not contain gluten; the basis of the food is rice, olive oil, onions, garlic, tomatoes, saffron, paprika and various types of meat and vegetables.
- tapas main course – if you go out for tapas or pintxos, many of these little delicacies are also gluten-free (olives, cheeses, hams,...)
- gazpacho – cold tomato soup is also gluten-free in Spain (but watch out for the croutons!)
- Spanish potato omlette - the Spanish tortilla is made from potatoes, oil, eggs and onions, and if you are celiac, you don't have to worry about your health here either
- patatas bravas – fried potatoes with salty sauce or mayonnaise (just be careful with the sauce – better ask where it comes from)
- from the sweet desserts you can try, for example Catalan cream (Catalan cream). It is usually made of milk, egg yolks, sugar, starch and vanilla. For other desserts - such as crispy churros - you'd better go to an establishment that specializes in gluten-free goodies or has a gluten-free option on the menu (e.g. Chök, see recommended restaurants and cafes below)
But there are many more of those dishes.
If you are not sure about something, just ask the staff.
It is important for you to know the following connection: "sin gluten" (Spanish) or "sense gluten" (Catalan) – i.e. gluten-free.
In this way, you will find marked all the dishes or establishments that are suitable for celiacs in Barcelona. Alternatively, you can search the established graphic designation of a crossed ear or the letters GF for food in the restaurant menu.

You can have great gluten-free pizza and pasta (or other Italian dishes) at the Messié Gluten Free restaurant in Barcelona

Find Me Gluten Free mobile app for everyone gluten free
If you're moving around Barcelona and want something to help you quickly find gluten-free restaurants around you, I recommend using one of the mobile apps on your phone or tablet.
My personal favorite is the Find Me Gluten Free mobile app. With it, you just have to allow access to your location and the application will then display a practical map based on your location with a list of restaurants in Barcelona that cook exclusively gluten-free or at least have a gluten-free part of the range.

Find Me Gluten Free - a mobile app that finds gluten free restaurants in Barcelona (available for Android and iOS)
For each restaurant in the application, you can see useful information such as the address, opening hours, rating or menu type (only gluten-free dishes, some gluten-free dishes, etc.). All this information will help you quickly find the right gluten-free restaurant in town.

(Alternatively, you can also search without the ve application web browser).

A stop at La Browneria is a must for all brownie lovers!
More tips for celiacs and people who don't want to eat gluten
- You can buy gluten-free food in regular shops and food markets, such as Mercadona, Carrefour or maybe caprabo. Of these three, I recommend Mercadona, which has a really wide range of gluten-free foods, and most of all, you will find it clearly marked on the packaging - you don't have to spend long minutes studying their ingredients.
- If you will be in a restaurant that is not gluten-free, it is usually not a problem to arrange with the staff and have a gluten-free option prepared for you - just don't be afraid to ask
- A great way to find gluten-free or lactose-free restaurants in Barcelona is to use them Google Maps. By entering "sin gluten" in the search, you can find not only restaurants but also cafes and pastry shops that have this connection in the name or in reviews. Once you're interested in a place, look at the reviews, in which you can also search by this keyword, among other things.
- As an emergency food solution, you can visit, for example, any branch of the McDonalds chain, where you can choose a gluten-free meal yourself via the kiosk.
- You can find many more tips in the articles My GF Guide, Gluten-free Barcelona or Whole roads.
