Long weekend in Barcelona: My tips for making the most of this beautiful Spanish city (2026)?

If there is a city in Europe, where? you have to go away for a long weekend, it is undoubtedly Barcelona. Compared to other European cities you Catalan the metropolis will offer several intense days full of amazing atmosphere, sights, attractions, good food and drink and of course friendly people. 

Since I know Barcelona almost like the back of my hand, I decided to write you my tips for the best long weekend (or city break) in town.

Barcelona offers plenty of opportunities for a long weekend

Since I've been running this site for over 10 years and have communicated with hundreds of people heading to Barcelona, ​​I've identified the 6 most common long weekends that people fly to the city for:

1. a romantic long weekend for two - surprise your partner, book tickets and set off together to explore the corners of the city. I really think that after Paris and Rome, Barcelona is the TOP destination if you want to spend a Euro weekend outside the borders of the Czech Republic as a couple. 
2. long weekend with the kids – you pack your bags, take your family and fly to Barcelona for a few days to relax, enjoy a different culture, the sea or maybe soak up the sun. (If this is the case for you, take a look at my guide to Barcelona with children.)
3. city break as a trip with your friends – you make arrangements with a few friends, book tickets (several low-cost airlines fly to Barcelona and you can get a ticket for as little as a thousand), a hostel or other cheap place to stay and set off to explore the beauty of the city, its monuments or local businesses
4. Bachelor Party - at Social media coordinator a few people wrote to me that they are going to Barcelona because they themselves or their friends will be getting married soon. Due to the energy of the city, lots of friendly people and quantity amazing clubs and bars I totally understand this. (By the way, you already tried bottomless brunch?)
5. football trip to the FC Barcelona match – I probably don't need to add anything here, right? Every football fan has heard of FC Barcelona and seen them play or visit the Camp Nou stadium is an experience of a lifetime. People often write to me for whom attending the FCB match is the main goal of the Euro weekend in the city. All you have to do is buy a ticket accommodations a match tickets and it is done!
6. to a concert of world music stars – quite a few readers also wrote to me that the reason for their vacation in Barcelona is a concert of their favorite band or performer; these events are mostly in halls at Montjuic hills (Palau sant jordi, Olympic Stadium) and stars such as Robbie Williams, Harry Styles, Beyoncé or Coldplay have performed here in the past.

What to know before the trip? 

• Barcelona is a big European city with 1.6 million inhabitants
• You can get to Barcelona in about 2,5 hours by plane from Prague or Vienna
• There is no time difference in Barcelona, ​​the time is the same as here
• In the city, payment is made in euros; you don't really need to have cash, in most places you can do with a payment card; you can find ATMs on every corner
• Officially the talk of the town 2 languages: Spanish and Catalan. However, in the center you can easily communicate with most people in English. 
• Although Barcelona is located in Spain, the locals identify themselves as Catalans and are duly proud of their nationality.

When to go to Barcelona?

Barcelona has a year-round stable climate and weather throughout the year varies on average from 10 °C (winter months) to 30 °C (summer months).

Personally, I prefer spring or autumn. It's hot in the summer and there are hordes of tourists. For me, it is absolutely ideal to go here in April or May, when the city is already waking up and preparing for the upcoming summer months. 

My tip for visiting time is easily: go to Barcelona in the off-season: you'll save money and at the same time avoid the crowds of tourists and the not-so-pleasant heat.

Top 7 sights in Barcelona or what you must not miss during your city break?

I have to tell you one thing: Barcelona is not a city you can "do" in one long weekend. Compared to other European cities, there is so much here monuments, attractions or even museums, that even a week would not be enough. You must come to terms with this before your journey. 

Always prefer I recommend putting fewer things on your itinerary, than spending your vacation running around with your tongue on your vest from one place to another. 

Accept that a lot of wonderful Barcelona sights you will miss it on your first visit.

3. Casa Batlló – a dragon house with an amazing facade that stands out especially at night
4. La Boqueria – a famous market where you can get something good to eat
5. Beaches – an obvious destination, especially if you are heading to Barcelona in the summer

Tips for visiting attractions and monuments

• Get one of the tourist cards, you can save a lot of money, time and nerves!
• Tickets for attractions, monuments and museums reserves well in advance! Especially in the high season, it can happen that the main attractions are booked for some time in advance and there is nothing worse than being in the city and not getting to the Sagrada or Park Güell just because you underestimate it...
• Go to the sights early in the morning or later in the afternoon; try to avoid prime tourist times
• There are many in the city museums and other places, which you can see for free on certain days (see article).

The best restaurants, bars and cafes in Barcelona (in my opinion)

There are actually a plethora of great businesses in Barcelona. Below you will find some of my tips for restaurants, bars, cafes and pastry shops. 

• You can't miss it in the center Can Culleretes for traditional Spanish dishes, if you fancy paella or seafoodd, go somewhere closer to the sea, for example to 7 Doors or Can Sole.

• I go to a hipster place for coffee Right Side Coffee Bar (formerly Satan's Coffee Corner) or an authentic one Nomad Coffee Lab.

• V Choke I eat amazing cronuts and other sweets that are also vegan and gluten-free (gluten-free businesses there are a lot of them in Barcelona, ​​by the way!). And when I'm downtown and I'm craving churros, I never miss one those of Manuel San Romano.

• Honest Greens I recently discovered and immediately fell in love with their simple, uncomplicated, yet well-thought-out dishes; the most I can beat myself up is things from the grill. Try it from a similar morning Flax & Kale, who also have several restaurants around town and ride the same "healthy" wave. 

• The National as a large food court with many different cuisines, it's great when you're in a group and you don't really know what you want...

• It never disappoints on a slow morning brunch z Caravelle, Gringa All Day or Milk Bar & Bistro. 

• Pro tapas or pinxtos I recommend going anywhere on Carrer de Blai in the Poble Sec district, where you have so many businesses next to each other that you will have a hard time choosing :-). Feel free to replace several of them in the evening. Start, for example, in Blah 9.

• Try it for drinks, for example Crepes Al Born, Número Nueve Bar and if you're into gin like I am, go to Bobby Gin in the neighborhood of Gracia.

More of my food and drink tips

• It is followed in Barcelona nap; also prepare for the fact that everything around food there is a slight shift in time here: lunches are usually around 14:30 p.m., dinner around 21:00 p.m. and so on... 
• During lunch, most restaurants have a daily menu at a discounted price (menu of the day)
• The water in Barcelona is drinkable, although a lot of people don't like it; it has a lot of chlorine in it
• It is not very customary to leave a tip in restaurants and cafes; this "culture" was mainly brought here by tourists
• Be sure to make a restaurant reservation for the evening, especially if there are more of you
• Download to save TheFork app, through which individual restaurants often give discounts on spending
• If you don't want to eat out, order food through the Glovo app.

Where to shop in Barcelona?

There are quite a few people who go to Euroweekends for shopping: they simply fly to some European destination, buy things there that are not available in the Czech Republic, and return home the day after. Whatever you think about it, I think Barcelona will not disappoint you in this regard either. 

• I recommend it for basic purchases center of city, there are lots of fashion or gift shops
• For high fashion shopping, head to the shopping aisle Passeig de Gràcia (and the adjacent Avinguda Diagonal), where there are many stores of brands such as Chanel, Prada, Versace, Hermès, Cartier, Tiffany & Co. 
• You can buy everyday items in one of the many convenience stores or supermarkets (Lidl, Caprabo, Condis,...), or for items of honor, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, go to one of the markets (La Boqueria, Santa Caterina, Sant Antoni,..), 
• There are several shopping centers in the city (El Triangle, Glories, Arenas, Diagonal Mar, Maremagnum,...) where you can find absolutely everything (fashion, electronics, books, gifts, food,...)
• If shopping is really your goal, I would consider it trip to La Roca Village, which is a shopping and outlet village near Barcelona with more than 150 shops. 
• When shopping, don't forget that Sunday is a time of rest in Barcelona and most shops are closed; therefore, don't leave shopping for souvenirs for this day, but go out for gifts on Saturday, for example.

How to get around Barcelona?

• Barcelona has a great public transport system, which you will find out on your way from the airport, viz description of how to get from the airport to the center.
• Even if there are buses, trains or even cable cars, you will use them most often local metro; with him after the center you will get everywhere you need.
• Compared to other European capitals, they are public transport ticket prices in Barcelona cheap
• a one-time ticket costs only €2,40, however, I recommend buying a card that includes more rides (T-casual, T-familiar,...)
• If you're really only going to be in Barcelona for 2-3 days, you'll be fine with with a T-casual ticket; if you don't want to think about public transport at all, get a travel card, for example Hola Barcelona, which includes unlimited use of public transport.
• I recommend using it for searching connections and generally moving around the city Google Maps; there is nothing like IDOS in Barcelona and Google maps are a great help when you you will transport around Barcelona.
• Don't be afraid to use taxis: company apps work here free now or maybe Cabify which are the equivalents of Uber or Liftag. And even if you catch a taxi on the street, you don't have to worry about someone pulling you over.

Oh, and watch out for thieves!

Barcelona is full of thieves, especially pickpockets! Be careful with your belongings, especially mobile phones are stolen here. Be careful especially in the center, on La Rambla, keep an eye on things on the beaches av meter. I have written tips on how to prevent this in a separate article.

(I am deliberately devoting an entire paragraph to information about thieves and pickpockets, because I was personally robbed and I know a lot of people who have had it happen too. Be vigilant and watch out - pickpocket gangs often include children, or decent-looking people you wouldn't tell!)
