The ancient Gothic district Barri Gòtic - what to know about it?

Barcelona district Barri Gotic it represents the historical part of the city, as the original settlement of Barcino, which gave the city its name, was located on this site. Today, Barri Gòtic is the center Old Town (Ciutat vella).

In this district we can enjoy houses and buildings of traditional Barcelona architecture and numerous historical monuments.

The heart of the district is Plaça Reial, which is the liveliest square in Barcelona. You can get to it easily from tourist boulevard La Rambla.

Square Pl. Reial is lined with buildings with tall columns, the arches of which hide a number of shops and pubs (cervecerías). In the middle of the square stands a fountain surrounded by several palm trees. Here, also pay attention to the lamps under which the famous is signed Antoni Gaudí. The lighting in this square belongs to early works of his work.

On the border of Barri Gòtic and El Raval we also find the beautiful Güell Palace (Palau Guell) from 1889, one of the first Gaudí's works. This is the very first building that the factory owner Güell ordered from Gaudí. 

In the historic center of the city on the border of the Gothic Quarter and El Born, you can also visit the beautifully decorated Cathedral of the Sea (Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar). The church is built in the Catalan Gothic style. You can also visit one of the oldest cathedrals in Spain - Gothic Cathedral of Saint Eulalia, where every Sunday you can dance the sardana with the locals. It is located a bit next to it Barcelona City Hall.

Beautifully decorated art nouveau building Palau de la Música Catalana it is a concert hall where, in addition to music, you can admire extraordinary architecture.

Barri Gòtic is interesting in addition to the monuments a number of shops and stores with all kinds of goods, restaurants, bars or pastry shops.
