Carles Buïgas: A visionary engineer known to the world for the Barcelona fountain

Who was Carles Buïgas?

Youth and early career

Buïgas was born in Barcelona and his family roots were firmly connected to the technical world.

Even during his studies in electrical engineering, he had a unique talent – the ability to connect the precise world of technology with the fragile beauty of art.

The first steps of his professional career led to public lighting projects, where his pioneering approach to lighting design began to be born, which later enchanted the whole world through the Magic Fountain in his hometown.

By its foundation but Buïgas was always a technician and inventor, although the artistic component in many of his projects was the dominant and visible one. This is evidenced by his later, purely utilitarian works: he designed, for example, a bombing seaplane, a remote-controlled torpedo guided by ultrasound, or a mini-submarine for one person. 

The work that changed Barcelona: The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

Buïgas's greatest achievement came with preparations for the 1929 World Exhibition. At the time, city representatives had planned to build several smaller fountains on Montjuic, but the ambitious Buïgas presented them with the idea of ​​one large, colorful fountain that would represent modern Catalonia.

Despite skeptics and a relatively tight schedule, The entire waterworks were completed in less than a year: Barcelona got an iconic fountain combining moving water streams and colorful lighting. Other Buïgas projects and his legacy

As I mentioned above, Buïgas was not only the author of The Magic Fountain.

During his active career designed over 300 projects worldwide, including lighting for the temple Sagrada Família or Cascada Monumental fountain v Ciutadella ParkHowever, the largest part of his work consisted of fountains and lighting projects, which is why he is considered a pioneer in this field at the beginning of the 20th century. 

Carles Buïgas died in 1979, but his legacy and work lives on. In addition to Catalonia, his water works can be found in the Canary Islands and Latin America, especially in Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela.
