Mahón, the capital of the island of Menorca

Capital city the island of Menorca became Mahón (Maó in Catalan, around 30 thousand inhabitants) in 1722. Arab, British and Spanish influences are mixed in its architecture.

The city of Mahón is surrounded by a 5 km long bay, which is considered to be the largest natural harbor in the world. Several cute coves run out of it, such as Cala Rata, Cala Llonga or Cal Corb. Be sure to take a walk along the lively Cala Figuera seafront with its many bars and restaurants.

What to see in the center of Mahon?

You can walk through the center in about 2 hours, especially note:

• Santa Maria – the original mosque rebuilt in the 18th century into a Christian church with a giant organ.
• Town Hall – an impressive neoclassical town hall opposite the church with portraits of governors and notable Menorcan natives.
• Port de Sant Roc – the massive city gate of St. Roch was originally part of the fortifications.
• Claustro del Carmen y Mercado – a museum now functions in the bowels of the former monastery, markets are held in the cloister on weekdays.
• It's Castell (Georgetown) – once the seat of the English naval garrison, today the large square Placa de S´Esplanada with its shops, cafes and Tuesday markets attracts attention.

Beaches in Mahon and surroundings

On the island of Menorca you will find dozens of excellent beaches.

Unfortunately, you won't find classic beaches directly in the city of Mahón, you have to go to them by car: they are all outside the city. But trust me, this trip will be worth it and you won't regret it. 

Which beaches near the city are worth seeing?

Cala Mesquida beach – distance from Mahón: about 8 km (about 15 minutes by car); Cala Mesquida is a picturesque cove with clear turquoise water and golden sand. It is relatively small and enveloped in calmness, ideal for a quiet day by the sea.

Es Grau beach – distance from Mahón: about 9 km (about 20 minutes by car); located in the S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park and Es Grau is a picturesque beach with shallow water, ideal for families with small children. The surrounding area is also great for bird watching and hiking.

Cala Llonga beach – distance from Mahón: about 5 km (about 10 minutes by car); This beach is located near the port of Mahón and offers beautiful views of the port and the city. It is a popular place for swimming and sunbathing with calm water and a relaxed atmosphere.

Sa Mesquida Beach – distance from Mahón: about 9 km (about 20 minutes by car); Sa Mesquida is known for its clear white sand and clear water. Popular with locals and tourists alike, it offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Mahón.

• By air: Not far from the city is the Mahón Menorca Airport of the same name (MAH code)
