If you want to treat yourself to an exceptional experience before boarding (and start your vacation a little earlier), choose one of the luxury hotels in the Port Vell harbor area.

Mid-range hotels are an interesting option for those who don't need to spend a lot of money and would like to enjoy quality accommodation and good service before their cruise. The hotels I recommend are not in the immediate vicinity of the port (or at least a little further than the luxury hotels described above), but they offer an interesting price-performance ratio.

From the hotel you can walk to the port at a leisurely pace with your suitcases, or you can take a taxi and literally be at your boat in 5 minutes. This flexibility is priceless. It is also not far from the center, for example to La Rambla. 

Cheap accommodation by the port: When you want to save money

Who says you have to spend a fortune to stay near the cruise port in Barcelona? In the case of budget hotels, you have to compromise a bit in terms of quality and quantity of services or location. I recommend looking in cheaper neighborhoods like Poble-Sec, El Raval, Barceloneta or Sant Martí.

Hotel del Mar has a great location: it's not far from the port and the trendy El Born district.

3. Slightly smaller and more hidden in the Old Town area is Catalonia Port Hotel. This is a boutique hotel with an outdoor pool located approximately 1km from the port. A good choice for those who prefer a quieter and more family-friendly environment.

In addition to classic hotels, you can also find many cheap hostels in the area: the best location is Onefam Ramblas, a little further away is Hello BCN (where I stayed for a few nights in my younger years and it was cool), or if you like nightlife and entertainment, head to Kabul Hostel (which is the best party hostel in Barcelona). It really depends on what you expect and what you feel like...

What else should you know when looking for accommodation near the port in Barcelona?

• Large cruise ships dock at terminals A–E in the Moll Adossat area; smaller ships can be found at Moll de Barcelona by the World Trade Center (Terminal F2)
• The port is close to La Rambla, but it takes about 1 hour to walk to the central square, Pl. Catalunya. I therefore recommend using public transport, tourist bus (World Trade Center stop on the red line) or taxi.
• There is a shuttle service, the so-called Cruise bus, running directly from the terminals. This blue bus will take you to the airport in 5 minutes. Columbus Monument at the beginning of La Rambla (price €3, return €4,5; tickets)
• If you have a better hotel, ask about transportation options: many can arrange it, some even include it in the price, so you have one less thing to worry about. 

How much time does it take to get from the hotel to the port?

• Most cruise ships from Barcelona depart between 16:00 PM and 18:00 PM; current boat departure times.
• I recommend planning everything so that you are at the port at least 2 to 3 hours in advance. That is enough time to go through all the checks and board with a clear head.
• For most ships, boarding starts at 12:00 – 13:00, Last call to board is 1 hour before the ship departs.
